POST OFFICE PROTOCOL

Another way to read your E-mail is with a POPMail program such as Netscape
Mail, Outlook, or Eudora. Those programs operate on your own PC and use the
server only as a Post Office, from which to pick up your new messages and
send your outgoing messagaes. You mangage all your mail activities on your
own PC. This is the method most people would choose if they had their own
PC. The problem is that your messages are stored on your PC, so they
are only secure if you are the only person who uses that PC. For that
reason, you should NOT use Netscape Mail to receive any messages on the
PCs in the library. If you use Netscape Mail to send messages about this
class to the instructors, be sure to identify yourself clearly within the
body of the message, since it might not be clear who sent the message
otherwise.

YAHOO OR HOTMAIL

You can set up a FREE Yahoo or Hotmail account, which you can access
through any Web browser. You can then POP your genetics mail through your
Yahoo or Hotmail account via Web access from anywhere in the world. You
set this up through your Yahoo of Hotmail setup page, where you can
specify which POPMail accounts you want to access. I suggest you set it
to leave a copy of the mail on the server so that you can also access your
messages via the normal methods. Please note that although this works
well, Yahoo and Hotmail do have limits on the size of your inbox and the
size of attachments that you can receive.

MAILTOOL

Another method for managing E-mail is the X Windows program mailtool. This
method is not the preferred method, but you are welcome to try it if you like.
