Issue cover highlighting the intracellular trafficking of wild type and mutant forms of PLP and DM-20 in transfected COS-7 cells.

Southwood CM & Gow A (2001) Micros. Res. Tech. 52, 700-708.

Confocal images provide in vivo evidence of a protein trafficking defect in oligodendrocytes from
mouse models of the leukodystrophy, Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease.

Two myelin proteins, PLP (red) and MBP (green), are transported to myelin sheaths (arrows) in wild type (a.) animals.
Although MBP is transported to myelin in the msd (b.) and rsh (c.) mutants, PLP remains in cell bodies (arrowheads).
Bar: 20 micrometers.
