Expression of the Claudin 11 gene in CNS myelin sheaths (green on left) and inner ear (blue on right)

A confocal data set (left) reveals the localization of the tight junction protein, claudin 11, to discrete channels along
myelinated axons (red) in monkey brainstem. The bacterial lac z sequence was used to replace the coding region of the
Claudin 11 gene in mouse embryonic stem cells. Beta-galactosidase expressed under control of the Claudin 11
promoter/enhancer region in the inner ear demonstrates that this gene is active in the spiral stria vascularis of the
cochlea (lower) as well as in the membranous labyrinth of the utricle and semi-circular canals (upper).
