PREREQUISITES

Acceptance for graduate study requires approval by both the Graduate School and the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics. Specific admissions requirements include:

• Bachelor’s Degree: A bachelor's degree with a “B” average (3.0) or higher from an accredited institution.

• Graduate Record Examination: The general Graduate Record Examination (verbal, quantitative and analytical). Official scores must be sent using 1898 as the institution code and 0210 as the program code. Scores must be received by February 1st to be considered for admission in the fall of the same year. Scores cannot be more than five years old at the time of the application.

• Test of English as a Foreign Language: Applicants whose native language is other than English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

• Specific Courses: Successful completion of undergraduate course work in the following:

Required

o Biology, two semesters
o Chemistry, two semesters
o Organic Chemistry, one semester
o General Genetics, one semester
o Biochemistry, one semester
o Statistics, one semester
o Psychology, one semester

             Suggested

             o Medical Embryology
             o Calculus
             o Epidemiology
             o Additional Psychology

• Advocacy Experience: Advocacy experience in a volunteer or paid position working in social service agencies or with crisis counseling organization or related experience. Questions about applicable experiences can be addressed to the program directors.

• Understanding of the Genetic Counseling Profession: The applicant should demonstrate an understanding of the genetic counseling profession. Many successful applicants have accomplished this by shadowing or visiting with a genetic counselor.
