Overview of the counseling models currently utilized in genetic counseling. Introduction to and preliminary development of the communication, interpersonal, and psychosocial assessment skills needed to conduct a comprehensive genetic consultation. Ethical, legal and social issues.

Foundation for understanding and applying the practical aspects of genetic counseling to the reproductive, pediatric, adult, and cancer genetics clinical settings.

MD1 5400 Year 1 Medical Genetics

Genetics course for first year medical students. Students do not have to register for the course but are required to attend, and to take the examination (scoring the equivalent of “B”or better).

Advanced Genetic Counseling Theory and Practice

Further examination of the major theories of human behavior and how they

can be applied to evaluate psychosocial responses to genetic information and

how they guide short-term client centered counseling in clinical practice.

A comprehensive review of advanced topics in medical genetics geared

towards those who will be specialists in the field.

medical genetics and the genetic counseling. Presentations by

students and invited speakers.

A lecture/discussion format seminar focusing on issues relevant to students

making the transition into professional practice

Research Project

Student Plan B research project. Includes two semesters of research project seminar. Those who do not complete their project in W2 may have to register for a 5th credit in Spring/Summer 2.

MBG 8998

Genetic Counseling Internship

Students work under the supervision of a genetic counselor/geneticist in a

variety of genetic and subspecialty clinics and laboratories.


Clinical Internship 1 - Winter Semester, First Year (1 credit)

Introductory Rotations – attend various clinics (genetics, non-genetics)


Clinical Internship 2 – Beginning Spring/Summer Semester Y2

(5 credits) (5 - seven week rotations required + laboratory rotation at a combination of the following sites)*


  • Neurogenetics Clinic (Includes MDA, CMT)-University Health Center

  • Pediatric Neurology Clinic (Includes MDA clinics)-Children’s Hospital of Michigan

  • Cancer Genetic Counseling Service-Karmanos Cancer Institute

  • Division of Genetics and Metabolism (Includes Pediatric Genetics and Metabolic Clinic)-Children's Hospital of Michigan

  • Division of Reproductive Genetics-Hutzel Hospital

  • Department of Medical Genetics (Includes Reproductive, Cancer, Adult, Pediatric Genetics)-Henry Ford Hospital

  • Department of Cytogenetics (Includes Reproductive, Cancer, and some Adult Genetics) Oakwood Hospital

  • Cancer Genetics Service at Beaumont Hospital

  • Reproductive Genetics Service at Beaumont Hospital

  • Clinical Genetics Laboratories- Cytogenetics, Molecular Diagnostic, Biochemical Genetics service laboratories at the Detroit Medical Center


*With the consent of the program directors, students may arrange to do a rotation
at another site during the second half of the summer semester
