Neuroscience

The complexity of the central and peripheral nervous systems remains a challenge. Center faculty tackle this problem by using novel transgenic animal models including mouse and fruit fly models. Topics actively studied are neurodegenerative processes arising from the destruction of central nervous system white matter as seen in patients with multiple sclerosis, neuron-glia interactions, sensory neuron diversification, neuronal subtype specification, glial support mechanisms, and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, new therapeutic technologies are being developed for the treatment of ischemia-reperfusion injury as seen in stroke.
